Thanks to our guests’ generosity, IHOP raised more than $2.1 million last year. IHOP began its National Pancake Day in 2006, and since then, has raised $5.35 million for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and other local charities and given away more than 10.1 million buttermilk pancakes.

The US Department of Health & Human Services is using the observance to launch and new, improved OrganDonor.gov website.

“National Donor Day is a time to reflect on the great need for donated organs, eyes, blood stem cells, tissues, and blood,” said HRSA Administrator Mary K. Wakefield.  “With these improvements to OrganDonor.gov, we hope to make a difference by making a stronger case to the public regarding the importance of donation while arming them with good material they can use to make an informed choice.“

There are a number of actions people can take to observe National Donor Day:

• Register with your State Donor Registry and make sure your family knows you want to be a donor.  Visit www.organdonor.gov for more information.
• Sign-up on “Be the Match,” the national registry of potential volunteer marrow and blood stem cell donors.  Visit www.marrow.org for more information.
• Learn how you can donate your baby’s umbilical cord blood stem cells at birth. Visit www.marrow.org for more information.
• Donate blood. To find your local blood center and learn more about blood donation, please visit www.americasblood.org or www.redcrossblood.org.

Indianapolis Colts LB Gary Brackett understands the need to add more committed donors to the Be The Match Registry due to his brother’s fight against cancer. Gary was a Bone Marrow donor for his brother, Greg, who unfortunately passed away in 2005 after a two-year battle with leukemia. Fortunate to have a matching donor in his family, Greg did not have to search the Be The Match registry. However, 70% of donors are not that lucky and turn to Be The Match for lifesaving help.

Drive for Life takes the reigns as a 2nd annual Be The Match event, building on the successful efforts of Tyler Genneken in 2009. Tyler, a 14-year-old who passed away in November 2009 while waiting on a bone marrow transplant, did not have a matching donor on the registry. Tyler and his family made it their ongoing mission to encourage Indiana residents to join the Be The Match registry so no patient would have to go without a lifesaving transplant.

Unable to make the event? Ineligible or already on the Be The Match registry? You can still be part of Gary Brackett’s Drive For Life. Make a tax-deductible donation. Our generous partners have provided funding to cover the costs to add many new registry members at this event, but online and on-site donations are encouraged to help us reach Gary’s fund-raising goal of $10,000 to help add more Indiana donors to Be The Match.
